"Since masculinity is defined through separation while femininity is defined through attachment, male gender identity is threatened by intimacy while female gender identity is threatened by separation. Thus males tend to have difficulty with relationships, while females tend to have problems with individuation."
--Carol Gilligan (In a Different Voice)

For men to truly develop they need to shift from their more natural separation from others to some sort of attachment quality; vice versa for women.

This is really interesting stuff. She goes on to talk about how society is more set up for the male model of development.

I actually read this book a couple years ago and found this theme worth revisiting.
